West Ham, who have yet to make a new signing in the transfer market, have been delayed in their talks with Ajax’s Edson Alvarez.
“West Ham have stalled talks with Ajax over Mexican midfielder Alvarez,” British outlet 90MIN reported on June 6.
West Ham’s last season was an eventful one. In 2021/22, the Hammers finished seventh in the league, but in 2022/23, they languished in the bottom half of the table and fought a relegation battle. The Hammers narrowly avoided relegation, finishing in 14th place after a tough battle with other EPL clubs. The Hammers saved their last shred of pride by winning the UEFA Europa Conference League.
The Hammers have struggled to add players this summer. In fact, they’ve had an outflow of players. Last season’s captain, Declan Rice, left for Arsenal for £150 million. According to the UK’s Daily Mail, West Ham striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is currently being linked with a move to Serie A side Atalanta for £27.6 million ($458 million).
The Hammers have tried to make a move of their own, but it hasn’t worked out. According to Sky Sports, the Hammers made an unsuccessful bid for Manchester United’s Scott McTominay. A £40 million bid for Connor Gallagher was also rejected by Chelsea, according to global sports outlet The Athletic. More recently, a bid for Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse fell through.
Instead, West Ham have turned to Alvarez, who is a versatile resource who can play both defensive midfield and center back. Last season, Alvarez scored four goals and provided three assists in 44 games across all competitions. According to 90MIN, he attracted interest from Chelsea last year and came close to completing a move to Borussia Dortmund this summer, but the deal fell through.안전놀이터
The Hammers have begun their pursuit of Alvarez, but it’s not going to be easy. According to 90MIN, West Ham’s initial offer was £25.9 million, but Ajax have set a price tag of £30.2 million for Alvarez. It remains to be seen if the Hammers can overcome the transfer fee difference and make their first signing.
